The name of this cornice comes after Melrose Road where this cornice originates. It comes from the 19th century from the typical Victorian house. You might have noticed already that this cornice has a curve. When it is fitted, the bigger part of the cornice sits on the ceiling giving the impression of the ceiling being lower.
